![]() ![]() Sometimes it can even foster despair.īlessed are those who offer honest criticism with a gentle and sensitive heart. The superior critic we readily heed because they’re further down the road than we are.īut what about the peer critic? We cannot afford to ignore them. We can write off the inferior critic as someone who doesn’t know what they’re talking about or has nothing to contribute. So their criticism and their opinion may sting more than what comes from others. They know us well enough to know where we fall short. In fact, it’s their knowledge of us that makes their criticism all the more difficult to hear and to bear. Their criticism can be the most painful to evaluate, because they often know us the best. They aren’t inferior to us and they aren’t superior to us. The third type of critic we can call the PEER critic. Take the opinion seriously and make changes when warranted. But don’t let the criticism cause you distress. We can learn something valuable.īut there’s no reason to lose sleep over the opinion of others-even our betters. We should be willing to listen to the opinion of others who are in some way qualified to comment. Even when the criticism is given in a less-than-sensitive way, an honest consideration is in order. They probably have something to offer us. If we want to improve, we should be willing to listen to our betters. And sometimes the critic is superior to the subject of their criticism. There are two other kinds that we should seriously consider. And though we can safely disregard the criticism of our inferiors, not all criticism and opinions should be rejected. Not all critics should be dismissed as cranks with an agenda. The credit belongs to the man who is actually IN THE ARENA…īut not all criticism should be disregarded. The strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done better. It is not the CRITIC who counts not the man who points out how President Theodore Roosevelt reminds us of this when he says: Critics are often just articulate writers with opinions. This may be why the classic critic is not held in high esteem. In these cases, the opinion offered by the inferior person would carry little weight. An accomplished stage performer is superior to someone who has never acted in a single play. A world-class musician is superior to someone who doesn’t know how to play a single instrument. So a world-class athlete is superior to someone who is not athletic at all. The quotation assumes the contrast is obvious and unarguable. Most human beings have some commendable qualities, even if not many. There are few other meaningful ways to compare them.īut human beings have hundreds of qualities. After all, the contrast between lions and sheep is largely physical. It’s not as easy to contrast human beings as it is to contrast lions and sheep. When someone is superior in every measurable way to someone else, there’s little reason to consider opinions directed against them. They certainly don’t lose sleep over the opinion of sheep. Lions don’t lose sleep over what sheep think. Other animals respect the lion without reservation. It’s these characteristics that make the lion king of the jungle. Even if the sheep argued that lions are fearsome, vicious, and heartless-it’s really of little consequence. Which is not a compliment.Ī lion, being superior to a sheep and knowing their superiority, it can safely and confidently disregard the opinion of sheep. After all, a lion is regarded as king of the jungle. Lions know they’re superior and they rest in that fact. ![]() So they won’t be losing any sleep over it. ![]() Other than that, lions are superior to sheep.īeing superior to sheep, lions don’t really care what opinion sheep have of them. Sheep do provide wool, and they’re generally cuter than lions. ![]() When measured against lions, sheep are inferior in almost every way. If we compared a lion to a sheep, the contrast would be enormous. So why would a lion not lose sleep over the opinion of sheep? A lion has nothing to prove to sheep ![]()
